Sonic, being the fastest thing alive, is naturally a VERY high mobility character. He can easily close or create distance from his opponent; making it extremely difficult for them to escape or land a hit on him. This is further bolstered by his special moves, as the majority of them involve him rushing towards the opponent at high speeds from various angles. He isn't without faults however, as he has below average vitality and a relatively low damage output. In addition, the majority of his normals have fairly short reach and priority, which may not sound like much of an issue considering his speed, but can cause problems when it comes to trading or spacing. With this in mind, it is important to take advantage of his mobility to not only create openings, but to avoid punishment as well.
